Most of our waste is buried in the ground in landfill sites which: are smelly, take up lots of space and give off a harmful gas called methane as the rubbish rots in them.
You can help solve these problems by: reducing, re-using and recycling your waste items:
- Reduce – create less waste (e.g. by buying foods with less packaging to throw away)
- Re-use – use items again (e.g. by re-using bags, re-filling water bottles and taking unwanted goods to charity shops)
- Recycle – make something old into something new (e.g. used plastic cups can be recycled into plastic rulers and used paper can be turned into newspaper)
